Gen. James Mattis, President-elect Donald Trump's pick for secretary of defense, is worth as much as $10 million, according to a financial disclosure filed with the Office of Government Ethics, Politico reports.

Much of the amount was earned in the past three years from working with General Dynamics and other companies, as well as some $1 million in stock and options in General Dynamics, where he currently serves as a member of the board of directors.

Mattis also earned significant sums for consulting fees or honorariums from more than 20 businesses in the past year.

As part of an ethics agreement, Mattis has agreed to divest his current stock and forfeit any unvested stock and options in the defense company, which is the Pentagon's fourth largest contractor, once he is confirmed as Pentagon chief.

He has also agreed to recuse himself for one year in matters involving General Dynamics and to resign from Hoover Institution at Stanford University.

The Wall Street Journal reports Mattis reigned last week from Theranos, which has been embroiled in scandal.

The startup's founder, Elizabeth Holmes, was barred from the medical laboratory industry when regulators discovered that the company's testing practices put patients at risk.

Mattis now has his financial disclosure and ethics forms submitted, before his confirmation hearing, which is scheduled for Thursday before the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Democrats have expressed concern with cabinet picks who have not finished this process before their confirmation hearings.
