Carville: Democrats Were Hit By 'Mack Truck'

While other Democrats have sought to downplay the magnitude of what occurred during Tuesday’s midterms, veteran party strategist James Carville has used several colorful metaphors to describe what happened to his party.

Carville told Fox News Channel’s Bill O’Reilly that Democrats experienced a "real thumping" at the polls.

And in a Fox Business Network interview with morning host Don Imus, he used more colorful language.

"The Democratic Party got hit by a Mack truck," he said.

Imus observed that Carville’s top two allies and political clients Bill and Hillary Clinton campaigned for scores of losing Democrats across the United States and asked if that might be a sign of trouble if Hillary Clinton runs for president again in 2016.

Carville replied that this year’s election results had relatively little meaning with regard to 2016, observing that two years ago, President Barack Obama rebounded to win re-election after Democrats suffered a major defeat in the 2010 midterms. Carville also noted that President Clinton did the same in 1996, two years after the historic landslide which gave Republicans control of both houses of Congress for the first time in 40 years.

Carville did take a jab at Obama, however, saying that while this year’s Democratic Party defeat had little to do with either Clinton "it has a lot to do with President Obama."

Carville also said he doubts that Chris Christie "has any chance" of winning the Republican Party’s presidential nomination, telling Imus that the New Jersey governor’s take-no-prisoners style such as telling hostile questioners to "shut up" is likely to alienate more voters than it attracts.
