Israel has "brazenly" interfered in American electoral politics in a way that vastly outweighs anything carried out by Russia, political dissident Noam Chomsky has charged, Haaretz reported on Tuesday.
Chomsky, 89, a fierce critic of Israel, was interviewed on Democracy Now, an independent news program, and said the American media’s focus with Russia’s alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election was "a joke."
He said that "First of all, if you’re interested in foreign interference in our elections, whatever the Russians may have done barely counts or weighs in the balance as compared with what another state does, openly, brazenly and with enormous support."
Chomsky stressed that "Israeli intervention in U.S. elections vastly overwhelms anything the Russians may have done," Chomsky said, citing that "even to the point where the prime minister of Israel, [Benjamin] Netanyahu, goes directly to Congress, without even informing the president, and speaks to Congress, with overwhelming applause, to try to undermine the president’s policies... Did Putin come to give an address to the joint sessions of Congress trying to — calling on them to reverse U.S. policy, without even informing the president?"
Chomsky was referring to March 2015, when Netanyahu, at the invitation of then Republican House Speaker John Boehner, addressed the joint houses of Congress about the yet to be signed Iran nuclear deal, without formally informing the White House, something said to have infuriated then President Barack Obama, according to the Independent.
Netanyahu’s speech, in which he made clear his opposition to the deal, was boycotted by more than 50 Democrats.
The following month the Obama administration joined a seven-party agreement aimed at limiting Iran’s alleged nuclear weapons ambitions.
