The results of the Iowa caucuses will likely set the tone for the rest of the nation's presidential primaries and caucuses, The New York Times reports.
Political experts say outsiders like Donald Trump and Sen. Bernie Sanders could win as a result of voter dissatisfaction with the seemingly-endless gridlock and broken promises in Washington.
"There's a very disaffected segment of Republican voters and Democratic voters who just want to throw 'em all out," David Redlawsk, a political scientist at Rutgers University, told The Times.
"These particular voters have been told for several cycles, 'All you have to do is vote for me, and it will be 100 percent different.' It never is. Sanders and Trump are both benefiting."
In Iowa, the newspaper reports, voters' support of candidates on the "ideological fringes has amplified a national grass-roots rebellion against establishment politicians."
And that, according to The Times, has seen both political parties watch as their lineups of "deeply experienced, proven political leaders" are "brushed aside by Iowans in favor of idol-smashing outsiders."
