Senators will reportedly be briefed about security that’ll be in place for President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration.
Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., the incoming majority leader in the upper chamber, on Tuesday notified lawmakers of an all-senators briefing that’ll be given by the Secret Service, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Homeland Security, The Hill reported, citing an unnamed source.
The attack on the Capitol by supporters of President Donald Trump last Wednesday has prompted both scrutiny on law enforcement and raised questions about security for the Jan. 20 inauguration, The Hill noted.
Federal and state officials have boosted law enforcement and National Guard troops around Washington, and Trump has declared a state of emergency.
The Secret Service also will begin special protections for inaugural events a week ahead of the inauguration — earlier than initially planned, according to The Hill.
Biden is expected to be sworn in on the Capitol's west front, one of the areas rioters swarmed, climbing scaffolding and bleachers already in place for event.
“The great American tradition of an inaugural ceremony has occurred in times of peace, in times of turmoil, in times of prosperity, and in times of adversity,” Sens. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., and Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., said in a joint statement.
The pair are top members of the Rules Committee.
“We will be swearing in President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol on January 20, 2021.”
