A Republican member of Congress said Thursday allegations leveled at President Donald Trump are serious enough special counsel Robert Mueller needs to finish his investigation into Russian collusion — but impeachment requires a "very high standard."
Rep. Justin Amash, R-Mich., rattled off a series of tweets that also touched on the impeachment process, which he said he hopes does not occur.
"Many of the allegations against @POTUS are serious and should be taken seriously, especially by members of Congress," he wrote in one tweet.
In another, he wrote, "We should allow Robert Mueller to complete his investigation and issue his report before taking any action potentially affecting the president's tenure."
Amash then talked about the impeachment process.
"Upon impeachment by the House, the Senate conducts a trial," Amash wrote. "Only here does the vote represent a finding of guilt. While there is reasonable disagreement about the proper burden of proof, I believe that a very high standard must be met to overturn the results of an election.
"I hope that we don't get to this point, but I think it's important, given recent news, that members of Congress share their thoughts on this matter with the people they represent."
Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen said the two men worked together to pay off women who said they had affairs with Trump before the election. Trump said he knew about the payments after they were made.
Mueller and his team are looking into claims the Trump campaign had an improper relationship with the Russians ahead of the election.
