Seventy-five percent of Americans believe immigration is a "good thing" for the United States, while 19 percent disagree, according to a new Gallup poll.

The results are an increase over last year when the poll found 71 percent of Americans believed immigration was a “good thing” and 23 percent said it was a “bad thing.”

Here are how the survey results, released Thursday, break down:

  • 65 percent of Republicans and independents, who lean toward the GOP, say immigration is a "good thing"
  • 85 percent of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents, have a positive view of immigration
  • 39 percent of all those polled say immigration into the U.S. should be kept at present levels; 29 percent say it should be decreased and 28 percent say it should be increased

The poll, conducted June 1-13, surveyed 1,520 adults. The margin of error  is plus or minus 3 percentage points.
