President Donald Trump needs to tear up the "stupid' Iran nuclear agreement and start over, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said Thursday.
"We can't trust Iran," Huckabee commented on the Fox News "America's Newsroom" program. "For 38 years, they have never, not one time, kept a promise, kept a commitment."
The Iranian government, he continued, has "murdered their own people in the streets for protesting them. They've continued to sponsor terrorism through Hezbollah as well as through Hamas. They're the world's leading sponsor of state terrorism."
Huckabee contended that the agreement brokered during the Obama administration was a "stupid deal. This is like unlocking the liquor cabinet and leaving the key in the hands of an unreformed alcoholic and saying 'you can sit next t it, we hope you'll behave well.'"
The arrangement was "irrational' when it was made, and the only thing that makes sense about it is that "there was a whole lot of money that was being frozen, and a lot of pressure from big multi-national corporations and other governments who wanted their money back."
But it's not a financial issue, said Huckabee, as it puts the safety and security of the Middle East and the world at risk.
"They've taken Americans hostage," he said. "They've killed Americans. They've imprisoned Americans falsely. Why on Earth would we have anything to do with them and have any trust?"
It's not only that the Iranian government has treated outsiders badly, but the 'radical regime" has mistreated the "Person culture and the Iranian people, beautiful, wonderful, delightful people and culture that goes back thousands of years."
Huckabee said he can also see parallels with North Korea.
"North Korea, Iran," said Huckabee. "One has nuclear weapons. Both of them are crazy enough to use them. The world is crazy if it doesn't stop them, because we can stop them now before they light the candle, or we can regret that we didn't and try to hit it before it hits us while it's in the air on the way to a target."
