The House of Representatives has banned the Trump administration from constructing a new border wall in the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, NBC News reports.
Although border patrol officers had specified the refuge as the starting point for President Donald Trump's proposed wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, legislators banned construction in the refuge in the spending bill that passed a vote Wednesday night.
"None of the funds provided in this or any other Act shall be obligated for construction of a border barrier in the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge," reads the legislation, which has yet to pass the Senate.
The Department of Homeland Security did not respond to request for comment from NBC.
The Sierra Club said of the bill, "while it preserves the Santa Ana Wildlife Refuge for the time being, it still risks people and places nearby. The threats are still very real and will be felt by communities."
