President Donald Trump wants an equal playing field on trade with China and others around the world, and he will do what he can to make that happen, deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley said Monday.
"We've got to have tariffs come down," Gidley told Fox Business' "Mornings with Maria." "The president is going to fight for Americans, the American workers, American businesses to make sure that happens."
Gidley said he does not want to get ahead of Trump when it comes to a timetable for potential tariffs against China, but the president does want to come to a deal where the playing field will be equal.
He further pointed out a bilateral agreement has been reached with Mexico in recrafting the North American Free Trade Agreement, and Trump wants Canada to also be included in that deal.
"He believes our farm workers can compete against anybody around the globe," said Gidley, but he said he is not sure if there will be another deal announced before the midterm elections.
Gidley also spoke about an expected arrangement to be reached on three separate spending bills, noting if there is not enough funding for the border wall, it will hurt Americans.
"I think it hurts all Americans when our country is not safe, that is what this president swore oaths to protect," Gidley said. "American people, first and foremost, want border security. Democrats don't want to solve it, but the president wants a lasting solution and will fight with Congress to get it."
