House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., on Thursday said that Democrats would not provide Republican leaders with the support needed to move forward on a bill to reauthorize the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.
A group of more than a dozen House Republicans joined with all Democrats in the House on Wednesday to defeat a procedural vote on a bill to reform and reauthorize FISA, specifically Section 702, after former President Donald Trump released a statement saying, "KILL FISA."
The move prompted some speculation that Democrats, most of whom support reauthorizing FISA, could help House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., move forward with a vote on a stand-alone bill, but Jeffries shot down that notion when asked on Thursday.
"No and no," he told reporters when asked if he would back this maneuver and whether he has already spoken with Johnson about it.
Johnson said on Wednesday, after the failed vote, "We're going to try to find a way to unlock the rule. And I think it's possible. I mean, there are some differences of opinion. But I think everyone — most everyone — understands the necessity of getting this right and getting it done."
