What Republicans and President Donald Trump do in response on the issue of gun control is more important than what they say about it, said Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., Thursday.
"Do I think the president or Republicans were moved? I don't know. We'll find out. Actions speak louder than words," Nadler said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."
"We know what to do to decrease gun violence. You look at the statistics, the number of people killed by guns … the only real variable is the easy availability of guns in this country," Nadler said.
As an example of gun legislation that worked, Nadler cited Australia. "Australia had a school shooting a number of years ago, they banned assault weapons, they did a number of other things and they haven't had it since," Nadler said.
"We know what to do. Will we do it? I haven't seen the president or the Republicans step up to the plate and evince a willingness to do anything meaningful. We know what we ought to do. We have to eliminate the loopholes … so you have to pass a background check wherever you buy a gun. We have to ban assault weapons, ban large capacity magazines," Nadler said.
The congressman pointed out other means to keep guns out of the ownership of some people, such as prohibiting people with mental health issues, who are on no-fly lists, and who commit domestic violence.
Nadler also praised students who spoke out against gun control. "You'd have to be a stone not to be moved by that," Nadler said.
On Wednesday, Nadler, the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, urged Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., to bring gun violence prevention legislation to a vote, MSNBC's Kyle Griffin reported in a tweet.
