Sen. Chuck Grassley Tuesday said CIA Director Gina Haspel may be withholding documents and emails concerning the FBI's investigation of President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign to protect herself.
"I think there is probably something in the emails concerning Carter [Page] and [George] Papadopoulos that maybe have her name in it," the Iowa Republican told Fox Business' Maria Bartiromo.
Grassley and Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., sent Haspel a letter last week complaining that officials in her agency refused to schedule a phone call to discuss their document request, which was initially made in July.
"More than two months later, we still have not received any of the requested records that we detailed in that letter," the letter said.
"Is there something embarrassing in these emails that they want to cover up?" Grassley asked Wednesday. He added that if U.S. Attorney John Durham, who was assigned to investigate the origins of the Russia investigation, is to finish his job, the emails involved in the case must be released soon in the event Democrat nominee Joe Biden is elected president.
"If Biden gets to be president this is all going to be covered up just like even in this administration," said Grassley. "The Deep State people have not cooperated, even with the chief executive of the United States to get stuff out."
Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe was to have testified last week before the Senate Judiciary Committee, but he pulled out. Grassley said he hopes the committee's chairman, Lindsey Graham, subpoenas McCabe.
