Gore Endorses Schatz for Senate in Hawaii

By    |   Monday, 22 July 2013 10:57 AM EDT

Former Vice President Al Gore has endorsed Hawaii Sen. Brian Schatz in his 2014 Democratic primary race against Rep. Colleen Hanabusa.

Gore noted Schatz' work on clean-energy and climate issues, The Hill reports.

"Thanks to Brian's visionary leadership, Hawaii implemented its own groundbreaking Clean Energy Initiative. As a result, Hawaii has tripled its renewable energy production," Gore said in a statement.

"And we're going to need Brian's strong, outspoken leadership in Congress for many more years to get the job done."

Schatz tweeted a response to Gore's endorsement:

Democratic Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie in December appointed Schatz to fill the vacancy created by the death of Democratic Sen. Daniel Inouye.  But Inouye wrote a letter before his death, requesting that Hanabusa be named his successor.

The Democratic primary is expected to be close. A poll conducted in early July for the Schatz campaign showed the candidates tied at 37 percent.

Yet a poll conducted for Hanabusa supporter Emily's List in early June gave Hanabusa an 11-point advantage.
