While much of Washington’s punditry focuses on potential Republican candidates for president next year, the field of possible vice presidential candidates looks quite formidable too,

The possibilities include Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, a new conservative darling; vaunted Texas Gov. Rick Perry; and Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, who might have the strongest background of all as a former congressman, budget director and trade representative.
A nominee looking for a running mate in a state Obama won in 2008 might go for a governor such as New Jersey’s Chris Christie, Virginia’s Bob McDonnell or Michigan’s Rick Snyder.
Several women could make strong candidates, including Sen. Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire and Govs. Nikki Haley of South Carolina and Susana Martinez of New Mexico. As for Hispanics, there’s Rubio, Martinez, and Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval.
“There will be no shortage of great talent” for the vice presidency, Minnesota GOP Gov. Tim Pawlenty, a potential presidential candidate, tells Politico.
