The Rules Committee in the House of Representatives approved a vote on funding the government through mid-February, as well as authority for GOP leaders to speedily bring any bill up for votes in the next three days, Politico reported.
Democrats said a vote on immigration could be sprung on them with no warning, thanks to the change, the website reported.
"We're just worried about reports of immigration bills and other things that I think we would like more than a day to be able to consider it because you control all the votes," Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., told Politico.
Republicans on the panel rejected a motion to limit the change to just spending measures, but chairman Pete Sessions, R-Texas, assured Democrats they would be consulted before major legislation was added to the agenda.
"We're not trying to cut ourselves off. Spending measure or not, notwithstanding that, I would find myself at your door, and the speaker would find himself at Ms. (Nancy) Pelosi's door, on agreement," Sessions told Politico.
Republican congressional leaders are scrambling to avoid a federal shutdown, after a bipartisan immigration deal did not happen after a White House meeting in which President Donald Trump set off battles with Democrats.
