Republican senators are circulating a letter to President Donald Trump, urging him to preserve and modernize NAFTA ahead of Tuesday night's State of the Union, Politico reports.

Congressional Republicans, after a first year of being in lockstep with Trump on policy, are a bit nervous about the direction the president might outline for the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in his primetime address.

"I'm not uncomfortable. But I'm not comfortable either," Sen. Orrin Hatch told Politico. "I'm a free-trade guy. And I believe that this ought to be a free-trade country, especially when it comes to NAFTA and our hemisphere."

Republicans have taken to lobby Trump during party lunches, especially on Tuesdays when Vice President Mike Pence joins, in the hope he can turn the president around, Politico reports.

For now, Republicans have done all the prodding they can before the State of the Union speech, during which they hope to hear Trump speak of improving NAFTA.

"I've encouraged him to think of it in terms of modernizing NAFTA, not ending NAFTA," No. 2 Senate Republican John Cornyn told Politico. "A lot of members in our conference and on both sides of the aisle are trying to encourage the president to think in those terms."
