GOP Transition Team Recommends Term Limits

Term limits are an important issue for many conservatives. So they will likely be pleased to learn that The House Republican transition team is recommending a continuation of the current restrictions for committee chairmen, Roll Call reports.

House GOP rules limit lawmakers to six straight years, or three teams, as the top Republican on a committee. Those terms were implemented in the “Contract with America,” which helped push Republicans to control of Congress in 1994.

The full House Republican Conference is scheduled to vote on the rules next week, when the Republican Steering Committee is slated to select the committee chairmen. The recommendations aren’t binding but they may work against Reps. Joe Barton of the Energy and Commerce Committee, and Jerry Lewis of the Appropriations Committee, who need waivers from the Steering Committee to circumvent the rule.
