GOP Senators’ Projects Suffer if Spending Nixed

Taking a strong stand in politics always carries a multitude of ramifications, and not all of them are positive. So it is with the Republican Senate leadership’s effort to stall the year-end omnibus spending bill. Such a result would mean the loss of almost $2 billion in money GOP senators have sought to procure for their states, The Hill reports .

gop, spending, cuts, projectsIf Republicans unite behind Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (pictured), Congress would have to approve a stop-gap bill for fiscal 2011 that would probably freeze spending at current levels.

That’s why Democratic leaders are hoping they can attract some Republican support for their spending bill. The Republicans seen as most likely to vote for the bill are senior members of the Appropriations Committee whose home states would lose projects.

That includes retiring Sens. Kit Bond of Missouri, George Voinovich of Ohio and Bob Bennett of Utah.
