GOP Spending Bill Would Defund Obamacare

By    |   Thursday, 29 September 2011 04:31 PM EDT

A draft spending bill that House Republicans released Thursday would eliminate funding for much of the healthcare law passed last year, The Hill reports.

But the proposal, part of an appropriations authorization for the Health and Human Services Department, is unlikely to go anywhere. That’s because it doesn’t make enough spending cuts to satisfy the wishes of two Republican members of the Appropriations Committee.

The draft bill would strike any funding for the Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight, the office handling most of the Obamacare implementation work. The bill would take away $6.8 billion in total. Funding for Obamacare would be put on hold until lawsuits objecting to the reform package’s individual mandate are decided.
