More than half of Americans say the Republican Party will remain divided right up to Election Day, according to a new
NBC/SurveyMonkey poll. By comparison, most Americans expect the Democrats to heal their rifts by November.
The poll found that:
- 61 percent believe the party will still be divided in November
- 27 percent Believe the party is "divided now, but will unite by November"
- Only 7 percent think the party is currently united.
The poll also found that Republicans are more optimistic than Democrats: 47 percent of GOP supporters believe the party will unite before the election, compared with 13 percent of Democrats who say that.
As for the Democratic Party, the majority of those poll think the Democratic Party will unite by November. Only 16 percent of Democrats and 14 percent of Republicans think the division will last.
Finally, when asked whose endorsement of Trump would matter most, 35 percent of Republicans chose former President George W. Bush and 31 percent chose House Speaker Paul Ryan.
The online survey was conducted by NBC News/SurveyMonkey from June 13 to 19, sampling 18,208 adults, 16,135 of whom said they were registered to vote. The results have a margin of error of +/- 1.1 percent.
