Conservatives have set their sights on ousting Arkansas Sen. Mark Pryor, pressing GOP Rep. Tom Cotton to challenge the two-term Democrat while targeting him with a major media campaign.
Pryor, Arkansas' only Democrat in Congress, is considered among the most vulnerable incumbent senators facing reelection in 2014,
according to The Hill.
Republicans believe Cotton, who has built a national profile since winning his House seat just a few months ago, could be their best chance of defeating Pryor.
Cotton so far has refused to discuss a run, but his background as an Army veteran and Harvard-trained lawyer has won him popularity across the party, and supporters believe he would have the fundraising prowess to pull off a victory.
"He's an impressive guy, and there are a lot of people who are putting a lot of pressure on him to run," Arkansas Sen. John Boozman told the Hill.
One lawmaker predicted Cotton would take the plunge, possibly announcing late in the summer.
Meanwhile, conservatives are taking their fight to unseat Pryor to the airwaves. On Wednesday, the Senate Conservatives Action super PAC launched a $320,000 television ad campaign, painting Pryor as a Democratic Party-line liberal and hammering him for his votes for the 2009 economic stimulus package and Obamacare, according to Politico.
The 30-second spot is expected to run in about three-quarters of the state over the next three weeks.
