The Republican candidate for Congress in Pennsylvania’s upcoming special election holds a slight lead on his Democratic opponent, according to a new poll by Monmouth University.
State Rep. Rick Saccone, a Republican, holds a slight lead over Democrat Conor Lamb in the race for a district that President Donald Trump won by 20 points in 2016. This race is being watched around the country as a predictor of the midterm elections.
- 49 percent support Saccone
- 46 percent support Lamb
- 4 percent are undecided
- 1 percent support a third part candidate
"Saccone has a slight edge, but it’s nowhere near the double digit advantage Republicans typically enjoy in this district. The potential for a Democratic surge like we have seen in other special elections helps Lamb stay in the hunt but it does not close the gap entirely," Patrick Murray, Monmouth University Polling Institute director, said in a statement.
The poll also found that potential voters, which includes unlikely voters, favors Saccone to a greater extent than only likely voters.
"The fact that Saccone does better among all potential voters than he does in any of the probable turnout models is a clear sign of higher enthusiasm among Democrats. However, this district’s strong Republican bent may simply be too high a hurdle for Lamb to overcome," Murray added.
Monmouth contacted 320 likely voters in the district by phone from February 12 to 14. The poll has a margin of error of 5.5 percent.
