Fox News analyst and The Hill columnist Juan Williams took a pounding in the Twittersphere for his
comment on Fox News that the midterm election results had not produced a Republican wave — "not even close to a wave."
For part of Tuesday night, Williams' remark was trending No. 2 on Twitter.
While some in the Twittersphere reacted good-naturedly others showed no tolerance for any suggestion that the GOP's capture of the Senate and its expanded control of the House to post-World War II levels represented anything but a realignment of politics in Washington.
The "no Republican wave" has been
Williams' position since October and he did not change his mind as the election eve results flowed in.
He said on Fox News that given the large number of seats Democrats had to defend, losing eight or nine did not indicate a wave — more like "an anti-incumbent moment."
He had earlier rejected the wave idea on the grounds that Republicans are hardly more liked than President Barack Obama. "The problem for the Republicans in Congress is that they have even worse approval ratings that the president."
On Twitter, Carolina Girl @carolinagirl63 wrote that she thought Brit Hume "was going to blow his top! LOL" after Williams made his no wave comment.
Brendan McAllister @NTC_BJM posted: "GOP gets largest House majority since 1928. Someone should ask @TheJuanWilliams what a wave looks like."
Kristian Jokisch @kjokisch said simply: "Oh, but it is a wave and a BIG ONE."
Teri Peters @hipEchik posted: "Anyway, @TheJuanWilliams is right, it's not a wave. It's a flipping Tsunami!"
"Someone dump a bucket of water on Juan Williams and tell him "ITS A WAVE FOOL," wrote oBoLa cRaCkA @HouseCracka.
"I wish @FoxNews would put @TheJuanWilliams on a wave and shove him out to sea," wrote COGoddess @coloradorebecca.
More humorously, CoolCzech @CoolCzech1 tweeted, "That's Juan Williams on the roof ... "Wave? What wave??"
R.Kaminetzky @Obsessedabroad wrote "@megynkelly You and Brett did a terrific job. Watched and going to sleep happy. @TheJuanWilliams it was a typhoon, not a tidal wave!"
Kim @mrskimcam posted a picture of an ocean wave along with the tongue-in-cheek query: "Hey Juan Williams — can you confirm this is a wave?"
