New York State GOP Chairman Nick Langworthy on Tuesday called Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s plan to mail absentee ballots to voters for the upcoming June elections illegal and unconstitutional and said the group would legally challenge the move “at every level.”
“This would be an illegal & unconstitutional power grab,” Langworthy tweeted.
“Cuomo has adopted “never let a crisis go to waste” mentality to use coronavirus to ram political agenda through. This will severely compromise integrity of our elections & we will challenge in court.”
Cuomo is expected to issue an Executive Order allowing all registered voters to vote by mail in the special elections and primaries set for June 23.
The governor recently expanded absentee voting, but voters had to apply. Now, ballots will be automatically mailed out.
Langworthy said the move undermines the integrity of the state’s elections.
“The ‘never let a crisis go to waste’ mentality has permeated the Governor’s office and Cuomo is using this pandemic as a reason to expand his powers and force his political agenda through. If he goes forward with this, we will be prepared to legally challenge it at every level,” Langworthy said.
