A couple of donors are sponsoring some efforts to mobilize voters who oppose GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump, but both are writing checks in the millions.
The Ricketts family and the Stephens family have donated $8.25 million to anti-Trump super PACs in January and February, according to Federal Election Committee totals reported by
NBC News.
The Ricketts family owns the Chicago Cubs and founded brokerage firm TD Ameritrade and the Stephens family owns an investment bank based in Arkansas.
Our Principles PAC has brought in $7.78 million since it launched in January and $5 million of that has come from Joe and Marlene Ricketts.
Warren Stephens also gave $1 million to Our Principles in January. He and Jackson T. Stephens Jr., his brother, both gave $1.25 million to Club for Growth, another anti-Trump PAC.
Donor Paul Singer, another major investor in Our Principles, gave to the tune of $1 million dollars in January. He had been a major Marco Rubio supporter, giving Rubio's supporting PAC $5 million.
The feeling is mutual between Donald Trump and the Ricketts.
Trump fired zingers at them in a
Washington Post interview, saying, "They better watch out . . . I'll start ads telling them all what a rotten job they're doing with the Chicago Cubs."
Joe and Marlene Ricketts' son is Cubs owner Tom Ricketts. In a media interview reported by
ABC News, Tom Ricketts said, "It's a little surreal when Donald Trump threatens your mom."
