Five Republican donors gave more than $24 million into groups backing GOP nominee Donald Trump in the last three months, according to campaign-finance disclosures filed over the weekend, The Wall Street Journal reported.
These funds were part of $30.2 million raised by two pro-Trump super PACs over the three months which ended in September, which is by far the largest amount raised by any pro-Trump super PACs to date.
The groups reported $13 million in the bank at the end of the month.
The largest single contribution to the pro-Trump groups was by billionaire casino owner Sheldon Adelson and his wife, Miriam, who donated $10 million to the Future45 super PAC, which is running television ads attacking Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in key battleground states.
In comparison, the Priorities USA Action super PAC backing Clinton has raised $133 million through August, the latest number available. It also had $41.4 million in the bank at the end of that month.
USA Today reports that Trump and his aligned fundraising committees brought in $100 million during September for both the presidential campaign and the Republican Party combined, which is the largest amount raised by the GOP in a single month.
However, that amount still trailed by a substantial margin the $154 million that Clinton and her associated committees raised last month.
These amounts were all gathered before the release of the controversial 2005 tape in which Trump makes lewd comments about women and which has reportedly resulted in many Republicans, including donors, rethinking their backing of the GOP nominee.
