Democrats and Republicans in California are united in opposition to Proposition 14, a measure on the state's June 8 ballot.
The measure, Proposition 14, could diminish party power and influence by placing all the candidates for state, congressional, and legislative offices on the same primary ballot.
Under Prop. 14, the two top vote-getters in each race — regardless of party — would confront each other in a runoff.
"Why on Earth would you want to destroy the two-party system?" asked comedian Stephen Colbert, who discussed the issue in a televised interview with California lieutenant governor Abel Maldonado, The Los Angeles Times reports.
Backers, such as Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, believe the measure would pave the way toward more moderates in each party achieving election success.
