Congressional leaders are set to meet with White House chief of staff John Kelly this week to hammer out a deal on the spending cap, the Washington Examiner reported.
Republicans passed a stopgap bill before the Christmas holiday, averting a government shutdown just until Jan. 19, a fast approaching deadline.
Leaders from both parties will meet with Kelly on Wednesday, the Examiner reports, and then President Donald Trump will meet with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan this week to start prioritizing a Republican wish list for 2018, the Examiner reports.
Immigration reform, infrastructure and entitlement reform - especially Medicare and welfare - are all on the menus for Trump and Republicans in the aftermath of their major victory with passing tax reform.
"They need to fix the broken immigration system first, then stabilize the health exchanges, then they can move on to whatever is next. Probably an infrastructure bill," GOP strategist John Feehery told the Examiner.
But first, the looming spending deal - again - which some lawmakers worry causes confusion to Americans.
"These cliffs or artificial cliffs make it difficult for the military and citizens to figure out where the government is going," Rep. Scott Perry, R-Penn., said two weeks ago.
