Gingrich: Nikki Haley Will Be a 'Very Effective' UN Ambassador

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Wednesday he believes South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley will do a good job as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, and he is not concerned that she did not endorse President-elect Donald Trump's campaign.

"She's a very, very successful governor," Gingrich told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program. "She's a very smart woman. I think she'll be very effective at the United Nations, as effective as any American can be in an organization which has an enormous hostility to our values and to our interests."

Trump has made it clear he wants to be the president of all Americans and to bring people together, said Gingrich, and picking Haley is part of Trump's "very patient process of building out a team."

Besides, he said, Trump shouldn't narrow his team to people who were only loyal to him from the beginning of his campaign.

"There were 16 people running [for the GOP nomination]," Gingrich said. "So a lot of folks were going to support somebody else. You don't want to narrow your base only to people who were loyal from day one. I think you'll see other people who weren't necessarily for him at the beginning also getting significant jobs."

Gingrich also said he believes retired Gen. James Mattis will do well as secretary of Defense, should he be picked.

"He's one of the most talented, most practical senior commanders in the American military in our lifetime," said Gingrich. "He would be brilliant at anything he did. He's also a total patriot, so I'm confident if President-elect Trump asks him to, that he would serve as secretary of Defense and do so executing the president's desires."

Gingrich said he'd also approve of a post for former CIA Director David Petraeus, as he has a "tremendous record" and there are "a lot of things he could do well. Certainly, if somebody asked him to be the Director of National Intelligence, he would have an extraordinary range of skills to bring to bear.

"He understands as a war fighter what we need from the intelligence community. He understands as a former head of the CIA a large part of this intelligence community from the inside. He's a very talented, very smart guy."
