Newt Gingrich angrily denounced a week-long string of damaging reports about President Donald Trump as "garbage" and a left-inspired "smear" campaign — and called on Republicans to get back to work on jobs and national security.
In a Friday interview on Fox News' "The Story,"the fiery former House speaker said recent reports about Trump and the administration that rely on unnamed sources are "more of the left-wing hatred for Trump."
In the latest reports, The New York Times reported Trump called fired FBI Director James Comey a "nut job" and that his firing relieved "great pressure" on him, and The Washington Post reported a current White House official has become a "person of interest" in a probe of Russia's influence in the 2016 election.
"They are garbage," Gingrich said, adding the media "could've said, 'president leaves on historic trip to bring the Arab world to fight terrorism,' 'president leaves on historic trip to Israel,' 'president goes on historic trip to meet the Pope.'
"No. They come up with garbage in order to smear the president as he leaves the country. I think it's disgusting. I'm really sad The Washington Post and The New York Times cease to be newspapers and truly become left-wing propaganda."
Gingrich said Republicans must "take the news media head-on."
"They have to decide to stand up and fight. They have to call the stuff for what it is," he said. "Trump is the one person who has been the most willing to say that this stuff is baloney."
Gingrich added the GOP also has to "go back to focusing on jobs."
"Look at the trip [Trump is] on — this is a great moment for America," he said. "They should be emphasizing [that]. Get rid of the junk. Let's talk about what we will accomplish in the world to make it a safer place."
