The upcoming Florida gubernatorial election pitting Democratic Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum against Republican Rep. Ron DeSantis is the "perfect race" between surrogates of Sen. Bernie Sanders and President Donald Trump, ex-House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Wednesday, while predicting a red wave in Arizona and Florida this fall.
"The president once again proved his muscle in helping Ron DeSantis win the nomination by a big margin, when DeSantis originally was the underdog," Gingrich told Fox News' "Fox and Friends."
"The contrast in Florida is between an absolute socialist, who got only 34 percent of the primary vote, and a conservative Republican, pro-Trumper, is going to be about as wide as you could get."
The race matches up to what is happening in Florida's Senate contest, Gingrich insisted, where he thinks Gov. Rick Scott will "decisively" defeat Democratic incumbent Sen. Bill Nelson.
"When people start talking a blue wave, you ought to point out to them Florida is likely to be a desert island for the Democrats, with no wave at all," said Gingrich.
Gingrich also discussed the outcome of Arizona's primary race, where Rep. Martha McSally won the Republican nomination in the race to replace retiring Sen. Jeff Flake.
"President Trump was very gracious and supportive of Congresswoman McSally when they had the signing ceremony for the National Defense Authorization Act," he said.
"She was the first woman to fly in combat and has a remarkable record. I think she is going to win the Senate race there. Again, this so-called blue wave is going to disappear in the sand."
