Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo on Monday branded President Donald Trump’s zero-tolerance immigration policy of separating children from their parents as "wrong-headed, inhumane and cruel" and insisted The Ocean State will never provide National Guard troops to help at the U.S.-Mexico border.
"I am certainly not going to do anything to aid what I think is the wrong-headed inhumane and cruel policies of the Trump administration," Raimondo said, The Providence Journal reports. "I will do everything in my power to oppose that and not enable that."
And she inked legislation to allow hundreds of Dreamers -- undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children — to obtain driver’s licenses in Rhode Island as the nation tackles what she labelled a "broken" federal immigration system.
"In the meantime, we need to do everything we can on a statewide level, and one thing we can do is to grant the driver’s licenses," Raimondo said, noting Rhode Island has about 1,000 Dreamers.
"These people have done nothing wrong. They were brought here by their parents when they were babies. They’ve gone to school here. They work here. They’re in college here," she said.
Raimondo’s actions came as Trump continues to defend the seizing of children from their parents as families sneak over the border.
