The two Republicans are fighting for the seat made available by the retirement of incumbent Democratic Sen. Jim Webb.
Whoever wins will likely face Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine in the general election. He will obviously have plenty of financial resources of his own, so money is certain to play a major role in the contest.
Allen began his campaign Jan. 24 and has brought in an average of $150,000 a week since then.
He ended the first quarter with about $1.25 million cash on hand, a campaign source told Politico.
