Former President George W. Bush had a heart-to-heart talk with the wife of Sen. Steve Scalise and says she told him her critically-wounded husband is "fighting hard" to recover from the gunshot wound he suffered Wednesday.
"Last night I had a nice chat with Jennifer Scalise, who reports that Steve is fighting hard and getting better," Bush wrote on Instagram next to a past photo of him posing with Scalise and Laura Bush.
"They are both staying #ScaliseStrong, and Laura and I are praying for the Congressman's full and speedy recovery."
Scalise, the No. 3 House Republican, was wounded along with four others when a rifle-toting madman opened fire at a practice session of the Congressional softball team in Alexandra, Virginia. Shot in the hip, he remains in critical condition following multiple surgeries.
On Thursday, Jennifer Scalise issued the following statement on Twitter:
President Donald Trump visited Scalise on Wednesday, and Vice President Mike Pence stopped by to see him on Thursday.
