Jeb Bush's son — who stunned the political world by endorsing Donald Trump despite the brash billionaire's insulting attacks on his father — is in for an awkward family Thanksgiving this year, the Houston Press speculates.
"[He] will be lucky if his grandmother, the formidable former First Lady Barbara Bush, doesn't have him seated at the kiddie table," the newspaper's Dianna Wray writes. "Fingers crossed somebody takes pity on him and slips him some pie."
Earlier this week, George P. Bush, who serves as land commissioner of Texas, announced: "From Team Bush, it's a bitter pill to swallow, but you know what? You get back up and you help the man that won, and you make sure that we stop Hillary Clinton."
His endorsement comes despite Trump calling his dad — the former governor of Florida who dropped out of the presidential race earlier this year — a "very low-energy" kind of guy who doesn't have the "strength or stamina" to lead the nation.
Trump, who won the nomination Bush was sure he had in the bag, also ridiculed him as a "lightweight," a "stiff," and a "spoiled child" and "not a smart man."
Wray says that means the Bush hierarchy, which has put its nose in the air as far as embracing Trump as the GOP nominee, is likely to be cool to their young upstart, who is the nephew of George W. Bush and grandson of George H.W. Bush.
"It seems George P. couldn't be Switzerland and stay officially neutral on this one … How the hell is [he] going to show up at Thanksgiving, family in tow, and face his staunchly-determined-to-wash-their-hands-of-this-mess-of-an-election family?" she asks.
