The White House will give Congress a detailed plan for tax reform after the August recess, National Economic Council Director Gary Cohn said Friday.

"We're into the nitty-gritty details working on tax reform right now," Cohn told Stuart Varney on Fox Business in an interview. "We will have a very detailed, drafted tax plan to be delivered to Congress by when they get back from the August recess."

Legislators return to Washington next week after the Memorial Day recess – and House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin has expressed hope a full tax-reform bill would emerge in September, according to news reports.

Cohn told Fox Business that all options were being considered for the plan but that the administration preferred a complete overhaul of the nation's tax code.

"We are really driven to do the big reform and cut," he said. "Reform is still part of our agenda. The president ran on a reform agenda.

"We need to simplify the tax code. It is way too complicated.

"I want people to sit at kitchen table and do their tax return," Cohn added. "The fact that we have to hire tax advisors and tax planners to do our taxes doesn't make sense for America.

"We can do better than that. People should sit at the kitchen table to do their taxes.

"We need to simplify the tax-paying process in the United States of America."
