Americans' opinion of the news media has sunk to an all-time low, a new poll finds.

The Gallup survey released Wednesday reports 32 percent of Americans say they trust the mass media to report information "fully, accurately and fairly."

That's an eight-point decrease from 2015 — and the the lowest number since the pollster first started asking the question in 1972.

"The divisive presidential election this year may be corroding Americans' trust and confidence in the media, particularly among Republicans who may believe the 'mainstream media' are too hyperfocused on every controversial statement or policy proposal from Trump while devoting far less attention to controversies surrounding the Clinton campaign," the Gallup analysis states.

The pollster adds, "It is also possible that Republicans think less of the media as a result of Trump's sharp criticisms of the press."

According to Gallup, the drop is largely fueled by Republicans' mistrust of the media; Republicans who say they have trust in the media has dropped to 14 percent from 32 percent a year ago. The number for Democrats, however, was 51 percent; the number for independents was 30 percent.

The survey's margin of error is plus or minus four percentage points.
