FreedomWorks To Fight Against Syria Action

By    |   Friday, 06 September 2013 12:00 AM

The conservative group FreedomWorks is set to lobby against congressional authorization of the use of military force in Syria, Politico reports.

The group is also preparing to use its organizational influence to galvanize activists to bombard congressional phone lines to demand lawmakers shift their focus from an overseas conflict to the U.S. economy and debt.

In a statement set for release on Friday morning, Matt Kibbe, FreedomWorks President, says his organization has been “overwhelmed” with requests to help spread the message of opposition to a strike on Syria and that many Americans have “already roundly rejected the Obama Administration’s rationale for bombing Syria.”

Kibbe’s statement will also make the case that even a limited military action in Syria could have dire long-term consequences for the U.S. economy.

“The costs of brinksmanship in an ongoing civil war are steep, and a collapse of state would fall in our laps. In other words, if we break it, we buy it,” Kibbe will say.

“Americans can agree that the strength of our country ultimately depends upon our fiscal stability. While our nation is capable of summoning its superpower, it would be reckless for Congress to bankrupt us in the process.”

The group intends to use the vote in its annual scorecards of lawmaker voting patterns.

FreedomWorks’ position on the use of military force in Syria is on the same page with organizations seen as its polar opposite.

Left-wing groups MoveOn.org and CREDO Action are also opposed to intervention.
