About 67,000 Florida felons have regained the right to vote since the passage of a citizen initiative, a voter's rights group says, according to Politico.
Florida Rights Restoration Coalition thought 1.4 million felons would get back voting rights when Amendment 4 passed in 2018.
But the statehouse, led by Republicans, passed a law requiring felons to pay outstanding court debt.
Supporters of the initiative compared the Republican law to a "modern-day poll tax" and fought it before ultimately losing on appeal.
Still, leaders of the group sconsidered registering the felons “historical.”
“There is no doubt in my mind that there are thousands upon thousands of energized and inspired returning citizens throughout the state that will not be denied, that will be a voice, and will have an impact in determining who wins Florida,” Desmond Meade, the executive director of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, told reporters on the first day of early voting in Florida.
