FBI agent William Barnett, who was a member of then-special counsel Robert Mueller's team, said the prosecution of former White House national security adviser Michael Flynn was part of a "get [President Donald] Trump" attitude.
Fox News reported that his comments came during a Sept. 17 meeting with U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri Jeffrey Jensen, who was brought in by Attorney General Bill Barr to review the case against Flynn.
The news network noted that Jensen has joined U.S. Attorney John Durham's team in his review of the origins of the Trump-Russia probe.
During the meeting, Barnett also disclosed that he did not wish to pursue a Trump-Russia investigation, as it was "not there." He considered it to be a "dead end."
Barnett's comments came in documents filed by the government early Friday as part of the Flynn case, according to Fox News.
"Barnett thought the case theory was 'supposition on supposition,'" the documents stated.
After six weeks of investigating, Barnett said he was "still unsure of the basis of the investigation concerning Russia and the Trump campaign working together, without a specific criminal allegation."
Barnett asked agents what they thought "the end game" was in the Flynn investigation, according to the documents reviewed by Fox News. He suggested that they interview Flynn "and the case be closed unless derogatory information was obtained."
The FBI eventually charged Flynn with lying to federal agents and he pleaded guilty to doing so in December of 2017. The Department of Justice said in May it intended to drop all charges against him.
