Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, asked Dr. Anthony Fauci on Tuesday if former President Barack Obama or President Donald Trump took any actions that caused a coronavirus vaccine not to exist.
During the virtual Senate hearing, Fauci responded that neither president was to blame for the lack of a vaccine.
"No, senator. Not at all," Fauci said. "Certainly, President Obama nor President Trump are responsible for our not having a vaccine."
Romney praised the efforts made so far in regard to creating a new vaccine before pointing out that Trump blamed Obama for the lack of a coronavirus vaccine.
"Dr. Fauci, is President Obama, or by extension President Trump, did they do something that made the likelihood of creating a vaccine less likely?" Romney asked Fauci. "Are either President Trump or President Obama responsible for the fact that we don't have a vaccine now, or in delaying it in some way?"
Fauci gave his answer and added, "No one has ever gone from knowing what the virus was to a phase one [vaccine] trial as fast as we've done."
