More than 300 former Republican and Democratic national security officials urged Congress on Friday to hold President Donald Trump accountable for the "unconscionable abuse of power" in his Ukrainian telephone call because it was a "profound national security concern."
"President Trump appears to have leveraged the authority and resources of the highest office in the land to invite additional foreign interference into our democratic processes," the former officials said in a letter published by National Security Action. "That would constitute an unconscionable abuse of power.
"It also would represent an effort to subordinate America's national interests, and those of our closest allies and partners, to the president's personal political interest," the group wrote.
Based in Washington, National Security Action is "founded and largely populated by officials from the Obama administration," The Washington Post reports, though some signatories served in the Bush 41 and 43 administrations.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Tuesday that six committees would investigate Trump for his July telephone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and his suggesting a probe of former Vice President Joe Biden.
The speaker's move stemmed from an intelligence community whistleblower's complaint.
Trump tweeted Friday that he had a "perfect phone call with the President of Ukraine" and has slammed the Democratic probe as "presidential harassment."
In their letter, the former national security officials backed the congressional inquiry to determine "the facts."
"To be clear, we do not wish to prejudge the totality of the facts or Congress' deliberative process," the letter said. "At the same time, there is no escaping that what we already know is serious enough to merit impeachment proceedings."
