GOP incumbent Joni Ernst is behind in her Iowa Senate race with 485 of precincts reporting, trailing Democratic challenger Theresa Greenfield by nearly 14%.
Democrats must flip four Senate seats to maintain control of the upper chamber if President Donald Trump wins and three seats if Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden takes the White House. Republicans currently control the U.S. Senate 53 to 45, with two Independent senators in Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Angus King of Maine.
So far, Democrats have flipped just one Senate seat – John Hickenlooper handily defeated incumbent Cory Gardner in Colorado.
Polls have shown Ernst and Greenfield neck and neck since May.
