Rep. Eric Swalwell, a California Democrat, wants the Secret Service to investigate Donald Trump after he appeared to joke about someone assassinating Hillary Clinton Tuesday.
Swalwell made his point on Twitter hours after Trump's remark.
During a campaign stop in Wilmington, N.C., Trump said Clinton would be a threat to the Second Amendment.
"Hillary wants to abolish, essentially abolish the Second Amendment," Trump said. "By the way, if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, I don't know."
Critics seized on the opportunity to blast Trump for what they saw as an assassination joke directed at Clinton, a former first lady, U.S. senator, and secretary of state.
Trump's campaign denied the remark was referencing assassination, while Clinton's camp called the comment "dangerous."
