2 EPA Scientists Resign in 'Protest' Over Dismissals

By    |   Friday, 12 May 2017 04:11 PM EDT

Two scientists are resigning from an Environmental Protection Agency subcommittee in a protest against the removal of the co-chairmen of the board, according to the Washington Examiner.

"It is with certain regret and concern — and in protest — that we submit our resignations as members of the Sustainable and Healthy Communities Subcommittee of the Board of Scientific Counselors," scientists Peter Meyer and Carlos Martin said in a letter.

Martin tweeted the letter, calling the resignation a "painful professional decision."

"We have deep concerns about the leadership at EPA and its continued obfuscation of scientific evidence," Martin and Meyer's letter said.

The board includes advisers from business or academics who offer recommendations about EPA proposals for research and regulations, the Examiner reported.

EPA officials said the departure of co-chairmen Robert Richardson and Courtney Flint was not a firing. It just allowed some terms on the board to run out, the EPA said.

The agency wanted to give applicants to the board a fair chance, EPA spokesman J.P. Freire told the Examiner. "Advisory panels like (the Board of Scientific Counselors) play a critical role reviewing the agency's work. EPA received hundreds of nominations to serve on the board, and we want to ensure fair consideration of all the nominees — including those nominated who may have previously served on the panel — and carry out a competitive nomination process."
