Embodying the spirit of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren says she welcomes the "hatred" of Wall Street critics.
Warren took part in a panel Monday to discuss female regulators of the financial industry at Harvard University, along with former Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation Chairwoman Sheila Bair and former Securities and Exchange Commission Chairwoman Mary Schapiro, when she was asked by moderator Ron Suskind if she would have the same response as Roosevelt to Wall Street's complaints about him when he said, "I welcome their hatred,"
The National Journal is reporting.
"Sure," the Massachusetts senator said. "I didn't go to Washington to try to help those guys. They already have an army of lobbyists and army of lawyers. I've always known what I was in this fight for."
Warren, who is known for her populist message, has not held back on her criticism of Wall Street, so much so that some Wall Street donors have said that rhetoric from senators such as Warren and Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown needs to change or they will
reconsider campaign donations to Senate Democrats in the future.
The former Harvard Law School professor responded to the threat in March during a speech in New York City, saying that "I believe it's a serious threat" but that
she is not deterred.
"It is so brazen. If they think they can say in public, 'I don't like your tone, I don't like the way you talk about financial regulation' . . . I got news for them: bring it on," Warren said.
