In a rare trip to rural West Virginia, the heart of MAGA country, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., was able to hold her own if not change a few minds, according to Politico.

"A lot of people told me, 'You're in the reddest of the red here,'" 2020 Democratic primary candidate Sen. Warren said, per the report. "I like being here."

Wilburn Preece, 63, the local fire chief, warned Sen. Warren to not expect a warm reception there, but her anti-addiction message resonated with the 150 people in the Kermit, West Virginia, fire hall in a town of fewer than 400.

"She's a good ol' country girl like anyone else," 2016 President Donald Trump voter LeeAnn Blankenship, 38, said of Warren, Politico reported. "She's earned where she is, it wasn't given to her. I respect that."

Blankenship told Politico she might consider voting for Warren now, but the Democratic primary candidate's trip to rural West Virginia was not about votes, but addressing the nationwide opioid epidemic – which has been particularly problematic in rural areas.

"She done good," Preece told Politico of Warren's addressing addiction to a mixed crowd that included MAGA-clad Trump supporters.
