About three dozen leaders at major U.S. companies are reportedly considering withholding donations to GOP lawmakers who oppose certification of the Electoral College results that determined Joe Biden won the Nov. 3 vote.

The Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed sources, reported the issue came up during an hour-long virtual gathering of the business leaders Tuesday.

According to the Journal, the meeting included Walt Disney Co. Executive Chairman Robert Iger, who’s interested in an ambassador role under the Biden administration, Accenture PLC CEO Julie Sweet, a Republican who has donated to Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Merck & Co. CEO Ken Frazier, who broke with President Donald Trump in 2017 but has donated to both parties.

“We have to create some level of cost,” Thomas Glocer, a former CEO of Thomson Reuters Corp. and a director at Merck and Morgan Stanley, who attended Tuesday’s meeting, told the Journal. He’s a registered Democrat, the Journal reported.

“Just coming out with another public letter isn’t going to do much. Money is the key way.”

Though some lawmakers consider opposition from CEOs something to celebrate, “money is something they do care about,” Glocer said, the Journal reported.

“Respect for the rule of law underlies our market economy,” he added. “Business leaders need to stand up on these issues because in the end they are business issues, not just politics as usual.”

About a dozen Republican senators say they’ll object to the Electoral College tally at a joint session of Congress Wednesday to ratify Biden’s Electoral College win.

Majorities in the House and Senate would have to agree for the challenge to succeed.
