President Donald Trump quickly took to Twitter on Tuesday to distance himself from Republican Ed Gillespie, who lost the Virginia governor's race to Democrat Ralph Northam.
"Ed Gillespie worked hard, but did not embrace me or what I stand for," Trump said.
Gillespie, a former Republican National Committee chairman, kept Trump at a distance until the last minute. Virginia was the only southern state to vote for Hillary Clinton in November's presidential election.
Trump made use of the expanded character count on Twitter, using 215 characters in the tweet. He noted "Republicans won 4 out of 4 House seats, and with the economy doing record numbers, we will continue to win, even bigger than before!"
Trump earlier Tuesday tweeted out his support for Gillespie in a race that had tightened significantly in the final days.
